The Gbawe Alokoto Street Art Festival is a vibrant community-based cultural celebration held in Gbawe, Accra. It combines street art, music, dance, community health activities, and traditional Ga cultural elements to foster creativity and unity among local communities.
The inaugural Gbawe Alokoto Street Art Festival took place on August 27, 2022, along the Gbawe Chief Palace Road, in conjunction with the annual Gbawe Homowo celebrations.
The 2022 edition featured prominent Ghanaian Afrobeats artist, Mr Drew, as the headline performer. He also paid a courtesy visit to the Gbawe Mantse, which highlights the festival's strong ties to traditional authority.
The festival includes a community health walk that connects residents from various neighborhoods, promoting community building and participation beyond entertainment.
The 'Alokoto Diaspora Edition' is a planned collaboration that aims to extend the festival's cultural impact to Guyana, focusing on public murals, live art, cultural storytelling, and youth collaboration to bridge African and Caribbean heritage.
As a grassroots initiative, the Gbawe Alokoto Street Art Festival is locally organized by artists and youth groups, providing a unique platform for self-expression and cultural education.
